Piston Corer

The piston corer takes between 3 and 8 metres of undisturbed samples from soft and/or muddy sediment.

  • Modular 3, 5, 6 and 8 metre Piston Corers
  • Corer drops in free fall from a limited height
  • System comprises:
    Launch and recovery chute
    Release trigger mechanism
    Hydrostatic safety pin release
    Tulip type core catcher
  • Capable of obtaining continuous 84mm diameter samples
  • Water depths down to 4,000 metres
  • Suitable for obtaining samples in most marine sediments
  • An integral piston arrangement improves sample quality
  • Samples suitable for geological logging
  • All types of index/classification tests can be performed
  • Basic strength and consolidation tests can
    also be undertaken
  • Storage basket can hold up to 67 x 1m samples vertically
