Metocean Services

Gardline provides meteorological and oceanographic services worldwide, from nearshore to full ocean depth. Our services are tailored to the specific needs of key industry sectors: Oil & Gas, Marine Renewables, Utilities, Aggregates. Our equipment pool is kept up to date with the latest technology, and we look to provide innovative and cost-effective solutions for our customers, while giving our staff opportunities to grow and develop their skills.

Real-Time Current, Wave and Weather Monitoring

Real-time metocean monitoring can be invaluable in many phases of offshore development, from planning, contruction design, installation works to operations & maintenance. Data can be transmitted either direct from surface instruments (typically wavebuoys and metstations) or from seabed instruments via acoustic modems to a surface data bouy. Using HF radio, Orbcomm or Iridium satellite transmission for data gives minimal latency, with data also logged onboard the instrument to guarantee integrity.

Gardline can provide a complete real-time 'dashboard' of metocean data directly to offshore vessels or installations, as well as web-enabled databases to enable all authorised stakeholders to access in-field metocean conditions from their desktop in near real-time.

Longer term datasets can be used to provide local models or test existing models, while short-term deployments may be used to inform project decision-making offshore.

Offshore Oil & Gas Exploration Support

Gardline's Metocean Division provides support to several phases of oil and gas exploration, from 3D seismic through to drilling support and construction design and installation works. As exploration increasingly focuses on harsh deepwater environments, knowledge of local metocean conditions is more critical than ever to safe and effective operations.

Acoustic doppler current profilers (ADCPs) may be deployed either from the rig/drillship itself, or via a tethered seabed mooring with an option for surface data transmission. Current information is highly valuable for riser monitoring (vortex induced vibration), diver support or construction planning.

Wave radar or waverider buoys provide real-time seastate information, which may be coupled with forecast information to enable forward planning of O&M tasks. Real-time meteorological data can be used for HLO assistance and flight planning.

Renewable Energy

The UK leads the world in development of offshore windfarms, with aggressive targets set for power generation through renewable sources. Gardline is proud to be at the forefront of supporting offshore wind and wave power, and provides a range of metocean services through the project lifecycle, from pre-lease, consenting, design, construction and operations & maintenance.

Metocean data informs not only the generating potential of a given site, but also the design challenges and costs associated with development. Wind, wave, current, turbidity, and salinity are all generally routinely recorded to assist design of turbines, foundations and associated infrastructure, while real-time wind and seastate information from site can reduce installation/support vessel downtime and greatly improve offshore safety.

Locations and Contacts

Gardline operates metocean services worldwide, with equipment pools strategically located in the UK, Australia and the US, as well as permanent deployments on Gardline's fleet of dedicated survey vessels.
